The modular outdoor sofa is designed for flexible seating, allowing multiple lounge configurations that adapt to different spaces. A lightweight aluminum frame with an open structure supports spatial flow and enables practical cushion storage. Integrated ambient lighting provides soft illumination at night. The sofa uses durable, weather resistant materials and includes waterproof covers to protect cushions from moisture and dust when not in use. Additional modules, such as tables and daybeds, can be added to extend its functionality.

Unique Properties
This modular outdoor sofa is composed of multiple lounge chairs that can be arranged as a flexible seating system. Its aluminum structure features an open interior that reduces visual weight, enhances spatial lightness, and provides integrated storage for cushions. It also incorporates ambient lighting that enhances comfort and atmosphere at night. Designed for outdoor durability, waterproof protective profile covers shield the interior from moisture and dust when not in use.

Production Technology
Advanced production technologies like automatic cutting and welding ensure flawless parts. Bending uses up to 320 tons of force with automated angle measurement for precision. Robotic MIG-MAG welding and CMM 3D measurement ensure repeatability and efficiency, while sustainable painting optimizes resource use. The pillows integrate a grip system ensuring secure placement, and the frame includes profile-shaped covers to prevent water and dust accumulation.
Design Challenge
The biggest challenge was finding a provider in Europe capable of effectively manufacturing the product. The machinery required is large and needs significant infrastructure. Additionally, many manufacturers declined my proposal because I could not start with a large order. I only needed a few samples to begin with, but most wanted larger commitments. Overcoming these hurdles, along with production constraints, was crucial to achieving both design innovation and manufacturing efficiency.
Project Duration
The project began a year ago with the launch of an outdoor urban table. The growing interest in outdoor furniture inspired me to create a full outdoor line focused on high durability, comfort, and innovative design. The collection integrates lighting within the space, enhancing both functionality and ambiance for outdoor settings.
Operation Flow
This modular seat system lets clients rearrange the space as needed. Multiple modules can be aligned for various configurations. The design also accommodates corner units or auxiliary tables. Indirect lighting can be added through the open spaces in the structure. The durable frame ensures longevity, while the pillows are washable, replaceable, and waterproof for outdoor use. When not in use, the structure can be left outdoors, and pillows stored inside with the cover.
Research
Research began by studying top magazines, companies, hotels, and industry standards, focusing on comfort and durability. I created a functional, modular lounge chair, exploring design trends and manufacturing challenges. After consulting with companies and traveling across Europe, I found the right partners. The modular design improves flexibility and functionality, influencing outdoor furniture innovation, offering businesses advantages in durability and providing consumers with versatile, comfortable solutions.
Inspiration
This project stems from a university final thesis designing an outdoor table for Barcelona balconies, highlighting the importance of high-quality materials for outdoor spaces. At home, wooden furniture suffered erosion, required storage, and eventual replacement. Similar issues in hospitality reinforced the problem. The design emphasizes durability, sustainability, and recyclability, using aluminum for long-lasting, low-maintenance outdoor furniture.
Project Overview
Terra Lounge Modular Sofa has been a Silver winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2025 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill.
