Unique Properties

This is a home version of the children's candy 3D printer. The machine is operated by the mobile phone APP. It uses various flavors of candy particles as the material to print the taste and color image. There are many kinds of 3D data models to choose from, which can add a lot of fun to children's lives.This machine is simple in shape, more rounded overall, and the color tends to be cartoonish.

Production Technology

The candy 3D printer is mainly made of plastic material, natural color injection and matte surface. The front window is made of transparent acrylic, and the window is opened by a spring switch to take away the finished candy. The internal mechanical structure is the same as that of the traditional 3D printer, and the materials are all food-grade. Inside, the granulated candy is heated and melted, and finally solidified and formed through the nozzle, just like a hot melt gun.

Design Challenge

How to absorb the advantages of traditional sugar blowers skillfully and in what form to realize them, the integration and trade-off between traditional Chinese folk art and modern technology is the most difficult point of our design.

Project Duration

The project started in April 2019 in Hebei and finished in February 2020 in Hebei China.

Operation Flow

The candy 3D printer has a total of three raw material tanks, which can be filled with three different candy raw materials. Through the APP operation, anyone can set the printing order, number, and size of the printed model. Different data models will also be displayed. The time and amount of raw materials required for different sizes. The overall image of the model tends to be cartoon.

Research

We studied the working principle of the 3D printer, the state of the sugar at different times when it was heated, investigated the color of the candy and the different shapes of the candy that the child likes, and developed and adjusted the APP.

Inspiration

The inspiration comes from the traditional Chinese folk art: "Sugar Figure Blowing Art". The children like the candy made by the artists very much. Due to the difficulty of making and the reduction of heirs, this art is gradually disappearing. We want to promote this through 3D printing technology. Interesting art has brought more children into contact with this traditional Chinese folk art and added fun to the children's lives.

Project Overview

Candy 3D Printer has been a Silver winner in the Toys, Games and Hobby Products Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill. Silver A' Design Award recipients are recognized for their contribution to raising industry standards and advancing the practice of design. Their work often incorporates original innovations and elicits a strong emotional response, making a notable impact on the improvement of everyday life.
