Sustainable Packaging, Clay Pot Packaging, banana leaf, recycled paper, biodegradable packaging
Handcrafted clay pots, Banana leaf & Recycled Paper
There were two major challenges during the design process. The first being reducing the production cost of the packaging as the pots are handcrafted. This was resolved by connecting with the right vendor and increasing the production quantity. The second challenge was to make sure that the pots don't break during transit. This was resolved by training the delivery boys and including a thicker foam padding inside their delivery bags.
The Project started in February 2021 and finished in April 2021 in India. The brand was launched in April 2021
The dish is transferred in the clay pots which is then covered with butter paper and is closed using a clay top along with a label tied around its neck which specifies the dish and the curry. The roti/Naan breads are wrapped in freshly cut banana leaf which is then tied with a jute thread and a tag that specifies the type of bread. both of these thing go inside a recycled paper bag ready to be delivered.
Detailed ethnographic research was conducted to understand the local culture and food. An in-depth study of one-time-use plastic in food delivery packaging was done to find alternative packaging solutions. I came towards the solution after studying the old Indian practice of serving food in clay pots and banana leaves which are still used in some parts of the country. These are completely bio-degradable and completely safe for serving food.
The brand identity of Doaba Dhaba was inspired from it very unique packaging style. The packaging style of using clay pots and banana leaves was used in the cloud kitchen delivery system for the very first time during this project.
