Production Technology

The lounger offers a feeling of luxury with perfect ergonomics and comfort. It looks stylish also when not in use and requires no winter covers. The cushions are well ventilated to resist mould also when the back rest is folded down. The lounger is made of sustainable and extremely durable Accoya which lasts decades and requires no painting. Curve form with glue lamination. Minimal production waste. The ecological life cycle footprint is further minimized as there is no need for storage space.

Project Duration

Project was started 02/20 in Espoo Finland and finished 02/22.

Operation Flow

When the rain stops and the sun start shining. Take a coffee and walk to the garden. Lift up the backrest and sit down to enjoy.

Research

Lean Service Creation was used as the base design method. The users problem worth solving was defined based on user insight interviews among end users and interior designers. The design process was prototype heavy. Dozens of protos were made to find the optimal curve for ergonomics and weather shield. As the construction needs to be watertight typical furniture building methods do not apply.

Inspiration

The design was inspired by the short Nordic summer: the sunny moments are rare and too precious to be wasted cleaning furniture and carrying cushions back and forth. Why are outdoor furniture designed for decades so that they can’t handle outdoor conditions? As a designer I was tempted to try to show that it’s possible to redesign everything. Not just to change the form factor or ergonomics but to change the way the way the chair is used and the daily value it can provide.

Project Overview

365 Sun Lounger has been a Iron winner in the Garden and Outdoor Furniture Design award category in the year 2021 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.
