Eclosion is a modular planter designed for growing plants and raising butterflies, also creating an ideal environment to observe the natural life cycle. This product can be utilized as an aesthetically pleasing furniture set in both indoor and outdoor spaces while also serving as a safe and nurturing habitat for butterflies and plants. It is rotatable and stackable which enable users to customize the product to fit the interior design of the home space.
Planter, furniture, sculpture, life-centered
The planter is made from molded recycled wheat plastic, a sustainable material that helps reduce the use of woods, which is a significant contributor to climate change. In addition, the wire used in the product is made of milkweed floss fabric, derived from the monarch butterfly's host plants. This material is created from recycled waste left behind by the butterflies. All materials incorporated into the planter are biodegradable and recyclable, emphasizing its environmentally-friendly design.
Choosing the right materials for the Eclosion was a big challenge. The product is meant to help protect butterflies in the face of climate change and habitat loss, so I needed materials that were good for the environment. I chose materials that could be recycled or would break down easily without harming the environment. To make the planter work for butterflies, plants, and children, I did lots of research and found a solution that uses wires to make a partly open space. This design lets all the different things in the planter live together peacefully.
The project started in 2022 and was finished in 2023 in New York .
As a flexible modular planter that can be used in many different ways. For example, it can be used as an outdoor decoration with plants and butterflies, providing a beautiful view of nature. The units can be rotated to create various designs, making the planter even more versatile. Moreover, the Eclosion can be customized to fit the user's preferred interior design style, making it suitable for different indoor spaces. Finally, it's also a tool for children to learn how to raise butterflies and appreciate nature's beauty.
The research for the project involved an extensive investigation into the decline of the monarch butterfly population, which led to a field trip to the monarch butterfly reserve area in Mexico to deepen understanding of the milkweed host plant and butterfly ecology. Additionally, interviews were conducted with people with experience raising butterflies to gather feedback on existing habitat products and analyze user experience. The culmination of this research and analysis has resulted in the development of a customizable features, bio-inspired shapes, and sustainable materials choice.
The inspiration comes from the decline of the monarch butterfly population has become a critical concern due to habitat loss and the climate change. Moreover, many people have raised butterflies at home, but the products on the market lack proper design and are challenging to observe. Thus, the planter is designed to serve multiple purposes, not only habitat for butterfly raising but also furniture with aesthetic style. In addition, the planter can provides children a closer look to observe the natural life.
