Klyv is a one-of-a-kind knife designed specifically for children aged 2 to 4, addressing their unique motor skills and coordination challenges. Unlike traditional knives that require a sawing motion, Klyv wedge-shaped blade aligns with a child's natural instinct to press downward, reducing frustration and enhancing usability.

Made from stainless steel, Klyv ensures durability and safety while maintaining high product quality and attention to detail. Its handle is crafted from polypropylene, incorporating 30% wheat straw to reduce environmental impact. The 100% plastic-free kraft packaging reinforces its sustainable design. Klyv seamlessly blends functionality, elegance, and eco-conscious innovation, redefining safe and ergonomic kitchen tools for young learners.
We faced significant challenges in maintaining a seamless connection between the blade and handle for a clean food cut. Factories resisted due to its complexity, often suggesting design changes or rejecting production. Ensuring viability for mass production while keeping costs affordable, without compromising quality, functionality, or durability, has been another major hurdle. Scaling this design proved far more complex than anticipated.
The project started in mid 2022 and finished january 2024
The Klyv knife is carefully designed, focusing on the functionality and coordination of children aged two and above, both right-handed and left-handed. Recognizing that children are not yet familiar with the use of conventional knives and lack the necessary strength to cut effectively, this knife stands out for its ease of use and cleaning. It allows children to apply pressure safely with one or both hands, promoting the development of fine motor skills and independence in the kitchen from an early age. In summary, the Klyv knife is an accessible and effective tool for young ones on their path to culinary independence.
We designed Klyv as an ergonomic knife for young children, aligning with their natural cutting instincts for safety, usability, and sustainability. Through prototyping and user testing with children aged 2 to 5, we confirmed its effectiveness allowing them to cut food by pressing down instead of sawing. Klyv polypropylene handle with 30% wheat straw and 100% plastic free kraft packaging reduce environmental impact while promoting motor skills, healthy eating, and family bonding.
Klyv was inspired by my experience as a mother witnessing my children's eagerness to join kitchen activities. I saw the need for a functional knife tailored for young users. My aim was to reduce the risks of traditional knives while promoting healthy eating, family bonding, and early culinary skills. Klyv empowers kids as young as two to safely participate in meal prep, enhancing motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and kitchen confidence
