Production Technology

Livorno Sofa stands on a sturdy wood construction and heavy duty elastic belts. 32 density foam and snake-spring layer combinations create a soft seating experience. Top quality flam velvet fabric reinforces the feeling of tactility and comfort, while faux leather and boucle cushions emphasize the rich material combination in the living area. The sofa is designed modular to ease the transportation problems and to give the user chance to make their own combinations.

Design Challenge

During the product design process, we invested time in searching for a form that would sit to the ground, offer ergonomic benefits by ensuring contact with every part of the body, including the neck, while maintaining a smooth overall structure. Numerous experiments were conducted using various foam to achieve the optimal comfort level. And also ensuring modularity emerged as a key concern to address production, logistics, and cost-related challenges.

Project Duration

The project started in September 2023 in Istanbul and finished in December 2023 in Istanbul and was exhibited in Istanbul Furniture Fair in January 2024.

Operation Flow

Thanks to its modularity, Livorno Sofa can be used in many different ways, adapt to different decorative styles and meet different customer needs. This product can be a corner sofa, 3 seater sofa and 4 seater sofa.

Research

Asymmetrical lines and exclusive comfort were our headlines to start this project. We wanted Livorno Sofa to be an impressive centerpiece. We researched different comfort layers and assembled them with ergonomic needs. The form of the sofa was meant to be rather large scale to emphasize the comfort. Fabric had to connect to this sense of comfort at some level, therefore we chose velvet.

Inspiration

Inspired by the feeling of lying on the grass, Livorno sofa promises you a comfort above the clouds. The green flame velvet fabric, exclusively designed boucle cushions, and brown-toned leather were inspired by the natural balance of soil, tree bark, and grass in nature. The arms touch the ground and the base is lined with a leather strip, representing natural elements. This modular sofa can be combined in different configurations, similar to natural stone structures.

Project Overview

Livorno Modular Sofa has been a Iron winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2023 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.
