Assemblable Chair for Pelin Erkuvun
Lay chair is the result of the search for a new form and an alternative assembly variant for flat-pack chair designs. The chair is made by layering two complementary molded plywood parts: a seat element that fits perfectly on an "L" shaped backrest, which is then joined together on the solid wood chair structure. The main focus is given to the complementary form of the parts and the following mono-directional assembly process for a user-friendly design. The layering of the parts defines the aesthetic appearance of the chair and characterizes an effortless combination for assembly.

Lay chair is the result of searching for an alternative way of an assemblable seating solution that aimed to improve sustainable values starting from its reduced volume for transport up to its assembly. The main attention is given to the backrest of the chair and to a unidirectional assembly of parts starting from the backrest. The chair is made by layering a seat that fits perfectly on an L-shaped backrest and joined together on the chair structure and legs. The layering of the seat and backrest characterizes the aesthetical appearance where the chair exhibits a simple and effortless combination of plywood layers.

The seat and backrest are made in molded FSC certified Oak Plywood with a thickness of 8mm. The legs and the chair structure connecting legs and the seat are made in oak solid wood with cnc processes. Metal screws and wood dowels are used as assembly elements.
The most difficult part was designing the assembly process of the chair by reconsidering the design of each part (reducing material use, finding a coherent form and stability), and the assembly consequence for maintaining a user-friendly experience.
The project started in September 2020 and concluded in December 2020 in Milan, Italy
The simple assembly process creates the first interaction with the user. The chair can be assembled and disassembled with basic tools, as the design is based on assembly with metal screws and dowels. The easy disassembly of the seat and backrest offers the longevity of the product by facilitating the change of single parts and maintenance. This feature, besides, gives the possibility of changing only the seat for an upholstered or armrest version in need and could replace the purchase of a new whole chair through the purchase of seat variations.
The research was made primarily on the design for environmental sustainability and the necessary factors to consider when designing sustainable products. Particular research was made on minimizing the assembly/disassembly elements, aiming to introduce a mono-directional and reversible process. Consequently, research is made on plywood molding processes and reducing material waste.
The design is inspired by sustainable solutions and Scandinavian style with its simplicity and minimal language. The motivation behind is the desire for suggesting a new form and a simple assembly variation for flat-pack chair designs. Lay, as the name suggests, presents layering of plywood layers for a simply assemblable and user-friendly chair. Lay chair is mono-material, presents a simple assembly/disassembly of parts, and offers flat-pack transportation for a reduced footprint in order to follow a sustainable spirit.
