3 Seater Bench for Tomood Studio
The design concept is taken from the early Taiwan local wood and rattan stools, and is integrated into the modern home style through the reinterpretation of different material design. In this corner collection, you can feel the subtleness of the wood, the meshed surface design with simplicity. The 3 seater bench is entirely handcrafted with natural lumber. Wooden but lightweight, forging a sophisticated piece of artistic bench with bright wooden color, and four rounded corners to deliver elegance.

It features four rounded legs, not only can it convey the fineness and the uniqueness of wood pattern, but also avoid collision against sharp edges on the general bench. And its light and airy design creates an even, harmonious appearance, forging a sophisticated piece of artistic stool with bright wooden colour, and four rounded corners to deliver elegance.

A mortise and tenon joinery was employed in overall structure for perfect interlocks without any metallic latches. With such structural design, the furniture further empowers its durability, even with varied types of wood properties. The seat surface is crafted with a ventilating piece of rattan, purely handcrafted with traditional Taiwanese rattan pressing techniques, constructing a resilient structural integrity to better meet the load requirements. Even with such high durability, features its lightweight for convenient transportation and delivery.
The traditional wood joinery and rattan pressing technique is like any other traditional technique in every country, experts with this type of skill have been dramatically decreasing over the past decades. It is hoped that with the rise in popularity of the Corner Bench, this traditional but useful and cost-effective technique can be reflected from the modern furniture engineered with both conventional and cutting-edge practices.
The project started in Taiwan in March 2022. The first deliverable was completed in March 2022 and exhibited at the Taiwan 台灣工坊家具_木質生活展.
As the components are already modularised, the entire bench can be in mass production with only 3-4 modular parts. Unlike furniture with synthetic materials, natural wood and rattan are 100% biodegradable, demonstrating its high sustainability and environmental friendliness.
Taiwan has a forest coverage rate of 60%, but a wood self-sufficiency rate of only about 1%. In addition, most of the existing domestic wood is softwood from small-diameter trees and thinnings from forestry. The main core of Corner Bench is to explore how to increase the use of softwood through design, to achieve the goal of using both soft and hard woods, and to find the most suitable ratio to highlight the characteristics of domestic wood.
Inspired by traditional Taiwaness stool, with traditional elements of Taiwan heritage superimposed on the construction and appearance, such as an unparalleled and unprecedented wood joinery method without any metallic latches between any joints, as well as the distinctive mesh seat surface. The combination of lightweightness, simplicity of the construction and the precise craftsmanship delivers a heartwarming, sophisticated and contemporary piece of furniture.
