It is quite intriguing to be able to see aspects of one country's history and folklore through a different perspective. That led to the creation of Sousmotif, a coaster set which is inspired by the motif found on textiles that are produced by a traditional loom in Northern Greece. History lives on through a coaster and makes a new turn.

Unique Properties
The idea that one coaster could be multiplied into two and also combine the two different materials or not into various combinations according to the user's aesthetics was very intriguing to me.

Production Technology
Sousmotif is made out of laser cut okoume wood and white plexiglass. Because of the different nature of the materials, there was a lot of fine tuning that took place in order to reach the desired result.
Design Challenge
The transition from the folklore past to the present situation made me to lean first to wood as a natural material which would be complemented with Plexiglas. Keeping in mind the factor of sturdiness and after several tests with different types of wood, okoume plywood seemed to be the finest solution. The wish to get the user to create hers or his personal touch according to how they will combine or not these different materials and shapes led us to the design of a well-balanced product with a profound reference to Greece's recent past.
Project Duration
The project started in March 2016 in Athens and finished in July 2016 in Athens, and was exhibited in It's all, oh so souvenir to me Vol. 4, Thessaloniki Greece
Operation Flow
Each set consists of 4 coasters which by being able to be multiplied give us 8 coasters in total. When a coaster is placed on a surface, a negative or a positive footprint of the motif is created on it.
Research
I was always intrigued by the technical skills of the users of the traditional looms in Greece and the fine and rich results they were able to deliver through a vast number of motifs created on textiles. My idea was to brake down these motifs into simplified forms that they would be able to live through objects of our everyday life.
Inspiration
In search for a new generation of souvenirs that would bring up hidden aspects of our history, I came up with Soumotif. It is a coaster which is inspired by the motif found on textiles produced by a traditional loom in Northern Greece. The motif from a textile, is transformed into a 3D object, which is brought into our everyday lives through a coaster.
Project Overview
Sousmotif Coaster has been a Iron winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2016 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Iron A' Design Award is awarded to good designs that meet the rigorous professional and industrial standards set by the A' Design Awards. This recognition is reserved for works that demonstrate a solid understanding of design principles and show creativity within their execution. Recipients of the Iron A' Design Award are acknowledged for their practical innovations and contributions to their respective fields, providing solutions that improve quality of life and foster positive change. These designs are a testament to the skill and dedication of their creators, showcasing their ability to address real-world challenges through thoughtful design.
