Production Technology
Using polyurethane elastomer gel as the material, the mouthpiece has the characteristics of extremely high deformability and plasticity to make better contacts with each teeth surfaces and enamel. Toodo works with a specialized cleaning gel that is co-developed with chemical compounding company and sonic vibration motor board to achieve both chemical and physical cleaning. Through the cold light embedded the motor board to activate the oxidant with the cleaning gel to whiten teeth.
Design Challenge
Considering the circumstance of the environment factor of the product and user experience, both device and travel charging cases need to fulfill the basic requirement of life waterproof and dustproof. Through fine-tuning and modifying every part of the product to optimize for the tooling and molding process, the product set eventually meets the IP56 standard.
Project Duration
Started 2017 in Syraucse and finished full functional prototype in 2019.
Operation Flow
The user bites on the mouthpiece, and the device automatically starts to operate. The cleaning gel is pumped by the pump through the vibration motor board to the user’s oral cavity; the cold light illuminates the oxidizing agent to activate the whitening; the carbon particles in the gel work with sonic vibration for physical cleaning. After use, the user spits out the gel and rinses the mouth. The device is rinsed with water and placed in a case for disinfection and charging, ready for next use.
Research
Bristle is the culprit for damaging gum and enamel. Users need to learn to use the Bass Method for effective cleaning, but because of the various stiffness of the bristle and different habits for different users, bad habits will eventually cumulate to cause serious oral issues. 85% of Americans believe that oral health is very or extremely important to their overall health. 49% Half of Americans are somewhat satisfied with their overall oral health. Only 15% of Americans believe their oral health is excellent. 42% of Americans don’t see a dentist as often as they would like.
Inspiration
Having a shining grin is a window to a soul, whether it is in an external social environment or in the establishment of self - confidence, it plays an essential role. People are paying more and more attention to the health of their teeth. As a result, oral hygiene is evolving to be a sensual expression of fashion and life attitude. The most traditional way of cleaning the oral cavity is using a toothbrush; however, the bristle structure is the breeding bed of nourishing bacteria.
