Floor Lamp for Francesca Schiavello
Adamas lamp tries to combine the elegance of the Italian design tradition and the beauty of the Japanese origami art, with a calibrated match of different materials. The paper lampshade, realized by hand through origami technique, provides a warm and soft light. The iron, chosen for its physical characteristics, allows a slender structure that wants to enhance the lightness of the lampshade. The connection between these two elements shape is a brass cone, which serves as lamp holder.

Adamas lamp has a dual materiality: a metal pedestal and a paper lampshade. The iron pedestal wants to give a careful balance and harmonious geometry in dialogue with the delicate paper lampshade, folded according to the origami technique. It provides as a connecting point a brass cone, which takes up the geometry of the lampshade and gives light to the structure. The generated light is deliberately soft and warm, thanks to the materiality of the parchment paper.

The triangle of the structure has been made with square section tubular iron elements, dry fitted, fixed with screws to a circular base in rough iron with waxed surface. The structure is dry-fastened to the brass lamp holder, on which the paper lampshade rests with perfect interlocking. The lampshade is folded by hand with a FSC parchment paper, then it is fixed to the lamp holder.
This prototype lamp was a great challenge for me. It took me a few months to test different kind of papers, in order to chose the best one for my shape. It was essential that the paper lampshade could be removed and inserted at the user's convenience. The study of the proportions and the design of the pedestal took me a long time, with 2 other prototypes behind in wood. As I aspired to a more light and thin structure yet elegant, I asked support to a talented blacksmith to figure out which could possibly be the best assembly structure.
This floor lamp comes from a two-year project. It started in 2018 in Switzerland and ended in Milan, 2020
This floor lamp tries to combine elegance and lightness. A thin iron and brass structure supports a delicate paper lampshade. The lampshade is born under origami technique and it is carefully handmade with a FSC paper. It is for use with a LED e27 bulb only. An energy-saving lightbulb is healthier for you and the environment. The colored paper makes the light warmer and comfortable.
I approached the world of lighting by initially studying paper and its behavior with light through paper folding techniques. What plays an important role is the triangle tessellation, the smallest polygon one can generate. From the lampshade tessellation, the triangle gains relevance also in the metal structure. It was essential that it could appear as light and harmonious as possible, emphasizing the complex geometry of origami.
The study of this lamp starts with my desire to realize a light for my apartment. I began to study the behavior of paper through the technique of origami, looking for a shape that could best adapt to a floor lamp with light diffusion towards the ceiling. After a short time my research evolved looking for a base that could be as light and simple as possible, merging with the geometry of the paper. Thus a dialogue was created between opposite materials: paper as lightness and fragility, metal as stability and resistance
