Bookshelf for Kawn Designs
Reminiscent of Vitruvian Man by Da Vinci, which is a building block for modern and ancient civilization, and a standard of beauty across all disciplines to this day. The bookshelf functions as a keeper of knowledge. The shelving is a silhouette of Da Vinci's Vitruvian Man carrying out a rhythm orchestrated by the copper rods. Ring is a statement piece that interacts with both the space and the user. It can be placed against a wall or beautifully separate two spaces in a subtle way.

Vitruvian Man, Da Vinci, Ring, Bookshelf, Library, Golden Ratio, Shelving
A metal sheet manually bent into a perfect ring forming the main circle of the bookshelf structure, fixed on solid wooden base. The square background completing the Golden Ratio shape is done by brass rods, equally distributed and fixed to the wooden base. The rods go through holes in three of the five shelves of the unit. The other two shelves are held by bent rods that do not make it to the top of the square.
The first challenge was to make sure the circular shape holds without having to add obvious support. This was solved by adding two slim perpendicular rings at both ends of the main frame set to the inside to keep the lightness of the ring. The second challenge was to seamlessly carry the wooden shelves without messing with the Da Vinci ratio. To overcome this issue we fixed the brass rods to the base and made them go through consistent holes in three of wooden shelves. The other two shelves were carried on bent rods that did not make it to the top of the square without compromising the overall ratio.
The project started as. basic sketch on April 25th 2019 in Amman, Jordan. The manufacturing process took approximately three months. Ring was launched and presented in November 2019 in Downtown Design Week in Dubai.
Ring is a statement piece that interacts with both the space and the user. It can be placed against a wall or beautifully separate two spaces in a subtle way. It adds beauty, function and value to the space by allowing the user to relate to the Vitruvian Man and its Divine Proportion.
As an architect I recognize the value of the Golden Ratio and its impact on the monumental architecture in the world. With this realization and appreciation, I wanted to create a reminder of this human achievement in our interiors. Could not think of a better presentation than a knowledge keeper unit.
Ring is inspired by the divine proportion (The Golden Ratio). It is a silhouette of Davinci's Vitruvian Man carrying out a rhythm orchestrated by the copper rods
