Unique Properties

Using modernist lines and inspiration, Oscaria is Made by hand, to translates a Brazilian furniture face in the 50', when the constructive and material quality was the most important in a piece. The idea was use just two special and caracterist materials to compose this chair: wood and woven cane. The precepts of the old carpentry, having its parts glued, made one by one, it fuses the old and the new. Noble wood in its purest form.

Production Technology

It is done manually with the aid of a lathe. It is done one by one to ensure a good finish. The wood is cut and sanded, then turned and the pieces glued together to receive varnish. Finally, the cane fabric is fixed in the wooden channels.

Design Challenge

The challenge was to fix the woven cane in the wooden channels. In an artisanal way, we used a string to fix it. Finally, we had the chair with anatomic design in woven cane with the comfort and safety that we desire.

Project Duration

The project started in August 2020 and finished in January 2021 in Brazil.

Operation Flow

A chair with a structure well worked in wood, using simple lines, which can be incorporated in various environments, bringing sophistication and lightness. Materializes the basic act of sitting.

Research

The research was done on the modernist period (big designers and materials used) and the way of artisanal production and we discovered that the constructive and material quality was the most important for a piece in this time. Than we research about materials, and we decided use just two: Wood and woven cane, so caracteristic of Brazil.

Inspiration

Is inspired by the period modernist and big names in the design of the time, like Lina Bo Bardi and Joaquin Tenreiro. As a basis, it uses lines inspired by the Cathedral of Brasilia, a work by Oscar Niemeyer, for this reason, it was named Oscarina. A combination of straight and hand-turned lines with noble and caracterist Brazilian materials such as wood and woven cane. The idea was to develop a chair with elements that point to a common identity in modernist furniture.
