Coffee Table for Scala Luxury
The idea for this design was inspired by the water of the ocean. The sculptural aspect of this piece is manifested in the water like surface which accommodates the organic shape. Just as in nature, there are no visible connections, seams or construction to be found. Downward running water floating off a round spout seems to reflect in the shape of the legs. The brass meticulously mantels around the wooden body and is soldered and polished to give the impression of one continuous surface throughout the entire piece.

Hand molded, soldered and shaped by hand. This coffee table is mantled in brass sheeting, artistically laid over a hand-carved wooden frame with a top resembling the surface of water.
coffee tables, molded brass, organic shape, unusual shape, hand made, brass table
The base of this table is made from multiplex wood, cut and shaped by hand. The shape of the surface is carved by hand as well, the only way to create an organic and natural flow of water. The brass sheeting is the applied over the carved surface and molded, hammered and soldered to create the impression of a sold surface without any seams or connections.
The challenge on this piece was predominately the decision of what materials to use to create the organic effect of a water surface on metal to be floating all in one piece. Utilizing many materials such as resins, plastics, plasters, 3D printing, laser technologies and hand sculpturing to find the proper solution.
The design idea for this table originated in 2016 in Los Angeles but never came around to actual prototype production until January of 2019. It was first introduced to the public by Scala Luxury in Los Angeles in June 2020.
The surface is organically wavy but shaped in a manner where it is still functional. For example, a glass can sit on this table, the organic surface will make it stand on a light angle but not enough to tip over.
Much research was conducted on how to create a center piece that is organically shaped to resemble the surface of water. A great deal of time was spent pondering over design methods and the actual construction of a piece that has no connections, seams or any visible construction. Extensive experiments were conducted on how to have this visual appearance utilizing solid brass sheeting and complicated welding techniques to achieve a seamless organic surface.
The inspiration for this piece came from the surface of water creating a center piece that reflects an organic water-like surface in a luxurious way, an unusual shape that still has the benefits of being functional and could be integrated in to modern interior settings.
