Our connected world requires to live fast and efficiently. That's why the real luxury today is the ability to slow down, take time and be surrounded with beautiful things made with care and respectful of the environment. This coffee table with a sculpture of a mountain on its top evokes the poetry of the endless horizons and plunges the spectator into a contemplative state. This project bridges the gap between design, art and craftsmanship to combine aesthetic and practicality. The wood used to make this table comes from sustainably managed forests and the top is entirely hand-carved.

The table top is entirely made by hand in my workshop. As I carve the mountain part by hand, each table is therefore unique. I use carving tools such as carving discs, rasps, gouges, etc. The leg is made by a metalworker. Three coats of oil-based finish are applied on the top.
The biggest challenge on this project was ultimately to accept the idea of conceding a part of practicality for a more contemplative and poetic part. I like to say that on this table, there is a place to put your cup and a place to look at. This table bridges the gap between art, craft and design.
The first carved landscape I carved was in 2015 when I came back to France after 5 years in Canada. The first Mountain table appears in 2017 with a small relief part and then the mountain ranges never stopped growing and they now take a central part on this deisgn.
The goal is to have the impression that the mountain is litterally coming out of the table. The experience is not only visual, in fact, wood is a tactile material and the carved part is not fragile and can be touched without problem.
There is a real challenge in carving large pieces of wood and believing that the table is made from a single piece of wood. Illusion must be mastered in order to forget technique in favor of poetry. Wood is a living material and all the woodworker skills are required to build a durable and sustainable product.
Traditionally, the cabinetmaker covered a piece of furniture made by a carpenter with marquetry of noble and rare materials to give it value. Today, with globalization, these materials are losing their preciousness and uniqueness. The question was : "What value can I add to furniture today?" The answer came from looking at a beautiful landscape and figuring out how to bring it home. I began with wall sculptures of mountains and then desire to see it as central element on furniture.
