Unique Properties

The core element of the Spinn Coffee Maker is an innovative centrifugal brewing system that uses different speeds to extract coffee aromas. The centrifugal force allows coffee to be brewed as intended by the roasters. The Spinn machine can be controlled via touch-activated buttons, the smartphone app or Alexa voice control. Users and roasters can adjust brewing parameters and digital recipes. The machine is IOT connected and dried coffee grounds act as sustainable fertilizer. No cups, no waste.

Production Technology

The Spinn Coffee Maker extracts coffee using a patented centrifugal brewing technology. The RPM goes up to 6000. The conical burr grinder has a DC motor and is made of hardened steel. The Spinn Coffee Maker is IOT connected. The Spinn app works with IOS and Android. The app connects to both your WiFi network and to the machine. The app allows users to download digital recipes from coffee bags scanned from the Spinn marketplace. These recipes are customizable by customers and can be saved.

Design Challenge

The creative challenge in researching and developing the Spinn Coffee Maker was create a product that not only understands the deficits of the current market, but is able to bridge the enormous gap between producers and consumers in the most efficient and sustainable possible manner. The challenge was threefold. Firstly, in creating a machine that marries science with the art of brewing as the coffee maker processes each parameter of a coffee serving. Secondly, unlocking a coffee bean's potential through a unique brewing technology, allowing both espresso and filter coffee to be made with the same beans and same machine. Thirdly, to create a connected marketplace of local roasters that upload digital recipes and have their beans delivered using a subscription method connected to our users.

Project Duration

R&D started in 2014. Located in Amsterdam, Los Angeles, Belarus, Shenzhen.

Operation Flow

The Spinn Coffee Maker is controlled via touch-activated buttons on the machine's user interface or via the Spinn smartphone app. Alexa voice control is another way to interact with the machine. The smartphone app enables users to scan and download digital recipes from more than 1800 coffee bags on our online marketplace. Once downloaded, the recipes can be customized and saved according to individual preferences.

Research

In the scope of convenience, cloud connectivity, local products, environmental sustainability, personalization and premium user experiences, we saw a gap in the coffee market. Single serve coffee has been the prime source of consumption, creating a large problem of pods that are unsustainable and costly. Spinn empowers AI-learning and being connected allows us to develop new products and drive sales in a responsible manner. The Spinn ecosystem consists of intellectual property, numerous design patents and a traction & product-market fit that will help bridge the gap between local roasters, customers and perfectly extracted taste experiences.

Inspiration

We believe that the Spinn machine allows for cafe-quality coffee at home, thanks to the innovative in-house developed centrifugal brewing and grinding technology. With a growing network of roasters on our online platform and the ability to scan and download recipes, users are able to explore the largest online coffee market we have built with over 1800 bags of coffee and more than 500 roasters. The individual ability to intuitively control how the coffee is made is an unparalleled luxury.

Project Overview

Spinn Coffee Maker has been a Bronze winner in the Home Appliances Design award category in the year 2021 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Bronze A' Design Award is given to outstanding designs that showcase a high degree of creativity and practicality. It recognizes the dedication and skill of designers who produce work that stands out for its thoughtful development and innovative use of materials and technology. These designs are acknowledged for their professional execution and potential to influence industry standards positively. Winning this award highlights the designer's ability to blend form and function effectively, offering solutions that enhance people's lives and wellbeing.
