Compote Dish for GATO MIKIO
Sinafu Stand was designed as a daily tool that fits the modern life by utilizing traditional Japanese woodworking techniques. The plate and foot plate of this compote share common characteristics. And the soft outline that extends from the extremely thin stem to the plate emphasizes cuteness and is designed to fit in the hand to beautify the gesture that serves the dish. This shape is impossible without advanced craftsmanship. Beautifully presented dishes and beautiful gestures that handle vessels express the chef's hospitality and create an elegant and rich time.

Sinafu Stand is made in Yamanaka Prefecture, where lacquering and wood working techniques have sustained the craftsman population for centuries. The Sinafu line of raised bowls are intended to showcase the best characteristics of Yamanaka lacquerware. Standing on an expertly turned, thin wooden stem, food and other items seem to float in midair while the curved outer surface is both ergonomic and delightful to touch.

The wood used as the material is breathing and may be deformed by changes in the humidity of the air. The thin stem of this compote is susceptible to it and was initially thought to be difficult to produce in a stable manner. Therefore, the solution was to combine the plate and stem / foot plate with different materials. In addition, while retaining the impression of a thin stem, by pursuing an outline that minimizes the thin parts, we were able to reduce the risk of deformation and breakage to the maximum.
The project started in July 2017 and finished in February 2018 in Yamanaka, and was exhibited in interior lifestyle Tokyo 2018. Sinafu series from June 2011. These series are based on the concept of Japanese hospitality, followed by Sinafu, Sinafu stand, and Sinafu Deco.
Yamanaka has grown as a town famed for its wood turning production areas across the country, thanks to its exceptionally skilled wood-turners. Wood-turners here have developed techniques unique to Yamanaka, and are the only ones who can accomplish the high level of wood work that our original products show, such as Tatekidori, which uses wood that has been cut across the longitudinal grain to produce an excellent fit, Usubiki, a skill to turn the wood so thin that you can see through it, and Sensuji, one of the wood turning techniques for decoration.
In the present age when it is required to respond to environmental problems due to global warming and to transform into a sustainable society, the sound material-cycle society that utilized Japanese wood in the past will be used in the future improvement of the global environment and the sustainable prosperity of human beings. It can be a hint. However, in reality, what was made of wood has been replaced with plastic, etc., and the flow has not changed before. In the Sinafu series, we not only seek the shape unique to wood processing and convert it into functions, but also incorporate conditions that are impossible or difficult in plastic processing.
I used to work at a Japanese restaurant. There is a method using height in the serving of Japanese food, and there are often situations where it is difficult to serve. The reason for this project was that if we could serve beautifully and smartly in such a case, the value of the food would increase and it would change to an elegant meal time.
