Street Lighting for Atilim University
The Pebble is a sculptural street lighting device, that also operates as seating-leaning furniture, with irregular pebble-like geometry. It recycles the sludge waste generated during the cutting of andesite stones. Andesite is the most widely used natural stone in the construction industry, which yields tons of waste that is significantly rarely reused. The Pebble uses the tactile qualities of the material and blends into the urban environment tectonics. It emits light from a slit.

While andesite blocks are being cut residual dust yields. The cutting procedure involves water, and thus, the residue comes out as sludge. This sludge waste is collected in waste pools. However, due to the wide range of use and consumption of andesite, there arises a significant problem of waste storage which is approximately 15 tons per day of waste that threatens natural systems. The Pebble uses this waste in a cement-based composite as a means of sustainably disposing of the waste.
The most challenging part of the design was to identify a simple and recognizable and easy-to-appropriate form that mediates natural and urban geometries, materialities, and identities.
The pebble is designed to fit in all sorts of urban environments. It, therefore, does not respond to a specific case but rather intends to blend in different spatial compositions.
The Pebble might be used both vertically and horizontally. Its leveled surface allows for its horizontal use. When used vertically, it also operates as durable leaning furniture. When horizontal, it operates as seating furniture that emits light from below. In both versions, it provides low-altitude illumination, which significantly reduces urban light pollution.
We conducted research on materiality. The most widely used materials in the construction industry have been scrutinized. Their wastes had been deliberated, and andesite waste appeared at the top of the list. How to make use of its waste had been explored in response. The research also dwelt on efficient/healthy means of urban lighting. It explored the effect of lighting altitudes on comfort and environmental factors such as light pollution and landscape disturbance.
The Pebble takes inspiration from nature and renders the geometry of the pebbles with an urban image. Its simply recognizable form allows for its appropriation by the urbanites. While referring to nature in geometry, its texture and materiality take root in the urban environment.
