This is a rare gathering of art, where they, under a common theme, extract the essence of local cultural spirit and life content, expanding into various mediums for creation. From traditional bamboo, wood, and textiles to new media like video and digital interaction, they endeavor to embed art into people's daily lives, evoking resonance.
The Landscape Art Festival's pivotal aspect is cultivating a unique ceremonial atmosphere in diverse venue locations. Encompassing grasslands, slopes, water banks, ponds, and walls, each spot requires prior coordination with local authorities. Convincing them through initial design displays proves a challenging, effort-intensive task. Achieving consensus involves ensuring everyone feels respected and genuinely considered, integrating opinions into artworks without compromising their essence. This demands the curator's coordination and integration skills. Ultimately, selecting suitable artistic installations and placing them in agreed-upon locations heavily relies on effective human communication, often surpassing the design's presentation itself.
The project started from 4th August to 10th October 2023 in Taoyuan, Taiwan.
They endeavored to explore the regional culture, unraveling the history and traditional customs of the predominant Hakka community in Taoyuan. Extracting diverse themes from this exploration, they collaborated with local artists, schools, and community groups to create collectively. The fusion of local identity and grassroots culture was concretely manifested in the artwork through multiple workshops, interactive sessions, and on-site research, emphasizing the integration of locality and artistry.
Exploring Taiwan's complex history across various ruling periods is challenging. Navigating streets and alleys, they consulted local elders for insights into the region's evolution, encompassing geographical changes and lifestyle adaptations. Limited historical documents were supplemented by local library resources, crucial for project completion. Temples, key for ancient community gatherings, particularly caught their attention, reflecting a blend of transportation and religion. Examining temple carvings unveiled insights into the formation of local festivals, seamlessly integrated with Hakka culture. This hard-won information significantly influenced artist selection, expediting curation based on media and presentation techniques.
At its core, the festival weaves local contributions with global interactions, utilizing Hakka culture as a bridge to connect diverse communities. The primary exhibit extends from Longtan's history-rich Great Pond to the dynamic sports park, encapsulating centuries of evolution. This edition unites Hakka heritage, history, environment, and lifestyle, displayed through multidimensional art, public engagement, exhibitions, and performances - a revival of old-town charm embracing diversity.
