Electric Outboard Motor for Remigo Electric Outboards
RemigoOne is the first fully integrated outboard motor in the form of a rudder. Involving boaters, sailors, and enthusiasts throughout the development process gave the team strong insights needed to redesign boating into a simple, frustration-free experience for all, including those with no nautical know-how. It is the lightest in its class, with all vital parts sealed into an IP67 watertight housing, and requires near-zero maintenance. It is also truly versatile: the same unit can propel any type of vessel up to 8m/1500kg, fits seawater, and meets regulations for use on all inland waterways.

RemigoOne is the world's first 1000W e-outboard in the form of a rudder. With mere 12 kg it is lightest in its class. The same unit can be used on any boat up to 7 m or 1500 kg. The aluminum unibody is rated IP67: vital parts are fully protected against harsh marine environment and rough use, what minimizes the maintenance and prolongs the product lifetime. Innovative mounting system makes the mounting process a lot easier, quicker and safer - for both the user and the outboard.

We sealed the sensitive parts into an aluminum unibody, which withstands salt, water, sun and expected rough use much better than plastic. All aluminum parts are anodized and powder coated. White housing color withstands the long exposures on the sun, and protects the vitals from over-heating. We used premium LG battery cells rated for 1000 cycles (to reach 80% capacity), and intend to offer battery pack replacement with a system upgrade after the battery degradation.
Main challenges: - to reach the perfect ratio between range, power and weight, to ensure portability - to cut the the weight, solved by combining similar functions and leading us to innovative solutions like a 2-part bracket, multifunctional tiller and a magnetic key, that works as an on/off function and a safety kill switch - efficient battery cells stacking to optimize the manufacturing process (patented) - simplification of the interface and trimming unnecessary info, which we solved with two indicators instead of a display.
We started working on the project in 2018 and launched it in 2020 at Salone Nautico in Genova. The development and production facilities are in Ljubljana, Slovenia.
To mount, attach the bracket to the transom, then mount the outboard on it. Turn it on by placing the magnetic key on the interface. Control it using the two buttons on the interface, indicating your desired direction. With a simple pump action of the handle, switch between its functions: horizontal mode is used for steering, downward mode serves for carrying the outboard, upward mode is used for locking in central position and raising the outboard out of the water.
Instead of just replacing the tank with a battery pack, the goal was to design an outboard from ground up: to eliminate the user pains systematically, and opt for the most suitable technology, prioritizing fit over novelty or cost. We conducted interviews with 3 key user groups and keep them involved throughout development, through usability tests, task analysis and feedback. To design the interface controls we developed a simple boat steering simulator.
We wanted to challenge the usual pain points of comparable outboards: weight, cable corrosion, handling, oil leaks, reliability and durability. Instead of just electrifying a gasoline outboard, we have built one following what technology has to offer, material and use requirements, but above all: what boaters want from it.
