The lamp combines steel components shaped by wire forming, laser-cutting, and metal spinning, with a powder-coated finish for durability. Through iterative testing of prototypes, the final design was refined for both form and function, showcasing the seamless integration of manufacturing techniques.
The creative challenge in developing the Element lamp involved precise wire forming and laser-cutting alignment. Through closely collaborating with the manufacturing team and iterative testing, we managed to refine the techniques and overcome these obstacles. This process not only allowed us to achieve the lamp's intended form but also enriched the understanding of production technologies.
The project started in March 2022 in Providence, Rhode Island and concluded in February 2023.
The interaction with the Element lamp is designed for simplicity. By incorporating a knob for height adjustments and a swivel feature for angle modifications, users can customize lighting to their needs easily.
The research behind the Element lamp explored integrating laboratory equipment functionality into lighting design. The methodology involved iterative design processes and various manufacturing techniques. Prototypes ranged from low to high fidelity for thorough testing. Insights from these experiments led to the final design, focusing on efficiency and ease of use. This project demonstrates how design-inspired research can transform into real-life applications.
The inspiration for the lamp stems from the practicality and simplicity of laboratory equipment such as stands, clamps, and holders. It deeply influences its form, mechanism, and the entire manufacturing process to create a functional and efficient lighting solution.
