Production Technology

The structural parts of Spyker are made from reinforced Nylon and covered with food grade Silicone for instant heat absorption and protective anti slipping on table tops. The central highlight is made from Stainless Steel with spun brushed finish.

Design Challenge

The creative challenge was the integration of the small mechanical locking feature and the feeling when the trivet unfolded and snapped into position. This mechanism was vital for the interaction between user and product and required reliability for prolonged use. We were also facing the conundrum of the usability of the product itself. From personal and observational insight trivets aren’t always used for serving. We found trivets standing in as laptop stands as well as vase coasters. Ultimately we aimed to create a Design which would speak to non-traditional users and inspire other creative usages.

Project Duration

Design for Spyker started early 2015 in our Bangkok Studio and early production started in September the same year in HongKong at SNF+ headquarters.

Operation Flow

Spyker was designed to be functional and compact for users. When not in use this trivet loves resting in any kitchen drawer, standing up in a jar or being suspended from a kitchen hook. When needed Spyker quickly unfolds into a 22cm large diameter even when operated with oven gloves thanks to its grooved ducts. Cleaning and washing is equally simple and safe, just hold it under the tap and leave it out for drying.

Research

Our challenge was to create a trivet that could challenge the genius of a competitive product in the market. At the same time we looked at the existing range of trivets that usually are defined into two categories, table top and compact. We opted for the compact choice because we idolized the idea of portability and out of the way solutions. After bench-marking probably all available trivets we realized how badly this category needed Design attention. Trivets were either too difficult to unfold with triple or quadruple legs and stiff joints or they failed to significantly reduce in size for convenient storage.

Project Overview

Spyker Trivet has been a Platinum winner in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design award category in the year 2015 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Platinum A' Design Award is recognized for honoring designs that stand at the forefront of creativity and innovation. It is the highest accolade bestowed by the A' Design Awards, acknowledging works that blend remarkable innovation with impactful societal contributions. These designs not only showcase exceptional artistic and technical proficiency but also highlight their creators' commitment to advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
