Production Technology

The carbon-fiber composite material which designed in the traditional mortise and tenon structure, compounded with the modern high-strength material which made with the wood steam bending procedure, improves practicality and comfort.

Design Challenge

Moti chair increases the strength of the chair while reducing the weight and size; take into account the sitting comfort while innovatively adopting a circular skeleton. Which breaks the traditional thoughts on seat structure and the public's understanding of the chair.

Project Duration

The Moti chair project starts in December 2019 and was completed in February 2020 in Shenzhen, China.

Operation Flow

The chair deliberately adopts a two-color treatment design and separates the circles independently. This special shape will attract people's attention. The distance of the invisible pedals is based on a precise measurement after the person sits on the chair, and this distance just guides people to put their feet on the pedals

Research

We recruited 200 volunteers from different regions, ages and genders to participate in the research. After analyzing the differences between their living habits and hip shape, we finally selected the most suitable radians of the curve from 17 models. After research and analysis, we worked out the ideal diameter of the circle that placing two chairs side by side, and the distance between the two circle centers is the most comfortable distance we think people can communicate with.

Inspiration

The design is inspired by the arches, moon gate in ancient chinese gardens, the circular holes designation brings broader visual sense, which also implies that there is no barrier between communication. Sitting in the chair, you can free your thoughts and keep your mind flow unobstructed. Besides, this design also syndicates fulfilled and perfect.The idea of the moon inspiration is because of the traditional Chinese festival, the Mid-Autumn Festival.We like to sit on chair and chat with friends and enjoy the moonlight.

Project Overview

Motichair The Bar Chair has been a Silver winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2019 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition. The Silver A' Design Award celebrates top-tier designs that embody excellence and innovation. This award acknowledges creations that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional, reflecting the designer's deep understanding and skill.
