Closet for Pardon Design Studio
Waves is the output of a stylish, fun, and useful ergonomic design idea. As an alternative to tall rectangular cabinets, it appeals to users with its interior and exterior. It is an item of modular furniture that is demountable and also possible to expand with additional pieces. The form is inspired by a frozen moment of overlapping water puddles, which gives the exterior a monumental look and utilizable surfaces. The drawers at different levels used with the push-open system create a secondary horizontal wave experience. Brilliant blue was hand-painted inside and out as a statement of water.

A 7 piece modular cabinet unit made of lacquered wood that questions the looks and utilities. This ergonomic furniture with 1800 mm height, has flexible shelf adjustments for cosmetics and underwear, large drawers for clothes and accessories, and a shirt hanger sliding from the side. The closet was designed to experiment with its logic and aesthetics by keeping the main necessities of a wardrobe. To keep the clean-cut sculptural attitude, the user experience is shaped by the push to open system.
closet, wood, modular, abstract
The project contains 7 independent cabinets made out of lacquered wood and works with push to open system which leds to a second base of wavy experience by smoothly sliding drawers. A single tone of matte blue hand-painted inside and out as a statement of water.
The starting point was to manipulate the boundaries of simple, conventional cabinets that stand on one side of the room and have no other feature than their function inside. How will it be both monumental and have enough space to store? How it will be communicated with the environment and the users? How the exterior can be used to exhibit or store by creating surfaces? How to create a wave sculpture that answers all the above?
The project started in July 2021 in Iskenderun, and finished in November 2021 in Istanbul.
By pushing from the center on each surface, it automatically opens, you reach to drawers, and adjustable shelves. The same pushing process goes for closing as well.
The idea of a closet that is both highly functional and good-looking sparkled when the designer got uncomfortable with his closet. The process involved transforming a large traditional wardrobe into a user-friendly storage item that would contribute to the atmosphere of the room. The designer has experimented with the form by modeling according to the determined needs and the inspiration of the water element. Thus, a piece of sculptural furniture with comfortable use and sufficient space emerged.
A wave is one of the most familiar natural phenomena to the designer since he grew up by the Mediterranean Sea. So he picked a scene that he thought was special. It is a frozen moment of a wave that is about to disappear on the shore, an abstracted solid piece of water. From bottom to top, it represents the unique random overlapping action. When the body language of the piece of water transformed into a sharp, linear form; it becomes boxy yet messy.
