Chandelier for Che-Chia Hsu
Due to technical and machine limitations, the shape of traditional wooden tenons can’t change too much. By combining soft tenon steps with CNC processing methods, the impression of the conventional tenon joint is subverted, and tenon craft has more possibilities in shape and application, genuinely making it come alive. Inspired by experimental modeling, the shape of the dovetail joint and the twisting effect of the work are similar to the helical structure of DNA and thus tried to develop in this direction.

Authentic, delicate, precise, unique, breathtaking
CNC processing is used to create more complex teno shapes.Aluminum was chosen as the primary material, and a mirror effect was achieved through polished chrome plating. Choosing the method of SLA printing, transparent soft resin can quickly produce transparent objects with complex shapes and grind the surface into a matte surface to improve its light-guiding effect.
There are two biggest challenges during the development. The first challenge is that I have difficulties thinking outside the box and coming up with a unique design, so I seek ideas through numerous experiments. The second challenge is that the actual material is very heavy, so I must redesign the entire structure of my product
The project started in August 2024 in Taiwan and finished in january 2025 in Taiwan.
You can see the light only come through the tenon joint which indicates the detail of the design and the main theme of the entire concept.
In the beginning, I collected and studied numerous pieces of knowledge and ideas about the traditional technique of Chinese tenon joints through books. The next step to know better about the tenon joint was to learn how to perform this technique from a woodcraft master. After this, I used a 3D printer to test and verify my design and idea. In the final step, I consulted an ironworker’s ideas to apply the actual material to my design and make it work.
I am fascinated by the calculation and processing precision required for this traditional craft of woodworking joints, and the final product that is presented. Inspired by experimental modeling, I discovered that the shape of the dovetail joint and the twisting effect of the work are similar to the helical structure of DNA and thus tried to develop in this direction.
