Dond is a small and yet versatile low table. In order to apply a simple assembly method, A joint part is designed so that it can be easily assembled. The joint parts is made by 3D printer. The results from our experiment shows that the intensity of Dond can be increased by using three joint parts or more. The board surface of Dond is not attached with the parts below, therefore, the board is a multipurpose tool for our daily life. The joint parts is made by 3D printing technology while the table top and bottom are hand made. Japanese Sugi (cedar wood) is used as the main material for the parts of Dond.
Although 3D printing technology and wooden crafting can be fused seamlessly, but we are not sure about the sustainability of the combination during our research process. However the issue has been solved by conducting different experiments like attempting on different measurements of the parts.
The project was started and finished on October 2017 in Osaka and exhibited at "Composition 2017".
Dond can be easily assembled by attaching the legs to the main pole via the joint parts while the table top can be placed on top of it. The amount of table legs can be increased for stability by just simply adding more joint parts to the pole, and the table top can be removed anytime for other purpose. Dond is designed to be light and handy. It could be easily disassembled for transportation and assemble for usage in any occasions. The minimalism approach of Dond allows it to fit in any location.
During the research stage, multiple test conducted to check against Dond's durability and sustainability ensuring the design maintain lightweight and versatile. Different 3D materials was use including thickness measure for the jointing during this stage to successfully pass the test. Several collisions occurred during this stage resulted the designer to have selected Resins as the main material for the jointing part for Dond. Multiple test combination of size, material, wood thickness and weight measure has allowed the designer to accomplished and present the final stage of Dond.
The design inspiration of Dond comes from the frustration of bringing a huge table out for picnic or any outdoor occasions. The designer wanted to design a low table that can be easily assembled and has a high space efficiency.
