Clock for Chahar Group

Mob-clock is a table clock made up of a graded Mobius strap as the main body on a stand and a ball as a pointer. Although time is a linear one-direction concept, there are two repeating loops for each day, AM and PM, in normal clocks. Indeed, as in daily life, people do not switch their sides and continue and go on through the day; Mob-clock helps the user to have a natural feeling about time. In Mob-clock, the pointer moves in only one direction on one boundary of Mobius to pass 24 hours without any repeating and switching side and boundary.

Design Challenge

The Mob-clock project has faced the challenge of delivering a sense of calm in the user. Mobleclack's design aims for the users to interact with the clock in a way that makes them stay at the moment and feel less anxious over time, minimalism approach was chosen to responding This challenge and turn the tic-tac-toe movement into a smooth motion due to its mobility and spherical shape, and the color palette used in the MoboClack is white and black.

Project Duration

The project started in December 2019 in Tehran and finished in March2020 in Tehran

Operation Flow

The user will simply assemble the Mob-clock’s stand. This product interacts with the user in 3 emotional levels of Don Norman: At first sight the organic form of the mob-clock attracts user as sculptural object. When the user gets close enough to see the numbers and the ball which moves gently through the edge, the function will be realised. The mysterious geometry of the mobius strap will remain in the user's mind. Besides, the accuracy of the clock is every 15 minutes. There is no division for seconds to decrease the pressure of passing time and make it closer to our natural feeling about time.

Research

The initial hypothesis in the project research was that the analog clocks did not change from the beginning of their design except for formal redesigns but not to challenge the concept of time, accurate studies on the mathematical and geometric concept of time provided the best object similar to the concept we had in mind about time, Mobius strap in the Optimum mode is the closest form to the concept of time only by arranging the numbers and placing the ball pointer that moves according to its rule. And the result is a desk clock that works by its own rules and still displays time accurately and correctly.

Inspiration

The main body of the Mob-clock is inspired by the Mobius strap. In geometry Mobius is the simplest non orientable surface. It is a surface with only one side and only one boundary curve. When a point moves through the edge of the mobius it will reach to the opposite side of the edge without any jump or switching. The mobius strap is a symbol of non-duality. It is also the symbol of transformation and eternal change within stillness itself. Mob-clock delivers a new concept of time by converting the abstract concept of time-infinity and Mobius philosophy into a tangible minimal home object. Mob-clock creates desirable feeling of time with a combined mathematics and design perspective.

Project Overview

Mob Clock has been a Silver winner in the Furniture Design award category in the year 2020 organized by the prestigious A' Design Award & Competition.
