Production Technology

This project featured 1,500 Intel Classic Drones, which are lightweight and specifically designed for drone performance. The LED lights can be programmed with more than 4 billion color combinations and can be adapted to various physical performance environments.

Design Challenge

Weather conditions. If the wind speed in the performance airspace was too strong, the performance would not be possible. Rain or low clouds also cause moisture damage to the drones. The show was highly acclaimed, leading to an influx of more than 100,000 or even 200,000 people at each performance. The problem derived from the crowds was a large amount of signal interference. Mobile devices, such as cell phones and tablets, have become essential for modern people to access the Internet. When there were 200,000 people in the venue, it means that 200,000 mobile devices were transmitting over the network at the same time.

Project Duration

The project finished in February 2022 in Kaohsiung City, Taiwan.

Operation Flow

The drone show was rehearsed once during the Lantern Festival, and seven official shows were held at 9:45 p.m. over the Love River Bay. The show was not only a feast for the eyes but also an exhibition full of cultural stories. As a result, the first show created a lot of favorable comments among the public, and many people were willing to see the show from different positions in the venue for the third or even fourth time. A successful art show is one that people are willing to proactively engage with several times, which also means that tourism, dining, and lodging around the area were boosted, leading to a revitalized economy.

Research

In the project, the design team used 1,500 drones to present delicate animated content, combining elements of Taiwanese folklore and beliefs, history and geography, marine imagery, culture and technology, and sports. With the narrative goal of "symbolizing Taiwan and standing on the international stage," the design team presents the pride of Taiwan and the spirit of Kaohsiung in the night sky, bringing the audience a feast for the eyes and ears.

Inspiration

Inspired by the impressive performance of the spinning earth in the opening ceremony of the 2020 Summer Olympics (Tokyo), the design team wanted to present innovative sound and light technology on the stage of the Taiwan Lantern Festival. Taiwan's original design team provided the creativity and content, and international companies provided the drones and technology. The two parties worked together to present the historical and cultural context of Taiwan with 1,500 drones at a height of 204 meters and a horizontal height of 174 meters.
